Build and Launch a Foam Rocket

Three people practicing field hockey on a grassy field outdoors

STEM Area: Math, Numbers

Grade Level: 2-8

Activity Type: Build

About:

Build a foam rocket and launch it at different angles to observe how it affects trajectory. Students learn about the relationship between launch angle and range.

Materials:

  • 30 centimeter-long piece of polyethylene foam pipe insulation for 1/2 inch size pipe
  • Size 64 rubber band
  • Styrofoam food tray, cardboard, or stiff poster board
  • Three 8-inch plastic cable wraps
  • Duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Meter stick
  • Press tack

NGSS Standards
K-PS2-1

Plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

3-PS2-2

Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
